Reading Conventions Year 2 - Developing Inferential Reading Skills and National Focuses - T4T

Author(s): Lauren O'Brien

Reading Conventions

Reading Conventions is a completely new series designed to develop students' reading and comprehension skills. It has a specific focus on inferencing. The aim of Reading Conventions is to systematically provide all students with interesting and achievable activities, based on fulfilling national comprehension and reading requirements.

Why teach comprehension? Reading is fun, it's relaxing, and it is the building block of education. Comprehension is the essential goal of each and every reading task. Reading and comprehending exercises lay the foundation of comprehension skills that are essential for a lifetime of learning and pleasure. The more students practise, the more confident and capable they become. There are a number of important attributes that define this book:

  • Australian Curriculum
Reading Conventions focuses on addressing the content descriptions and elaborations as specified in the Australian Curriculum. The inside front cover of the book features the descriptions and elaborations that are developed throughout the book, as each unit works towards the achievement of Australian Curriculum standards.

  • Content
Reading Conventions is a developmental series. All forms of comprehension questioning are addressed, including literal, inferential, critical and interpretive. Each unit also explicitly focuses on teaching and providing practice on a number of keys skills such as predicting and confirming, creating mental images, finding the main idea, making connections between print and images, inferring meaning, using prior knowledge and recognising narrative voice. Many of the activities are based around skills needed for NAPLAN testing.

  • Text types
Every unit has a central focus built around a particular text type which will help students to understand and effectively interpret the endless variety of printed materials encountered in day-to-day life. The text types include visual texts and feature high-interest content that students will enjoy reading.

  • Motivational full colour design
This product has been designed in full colour with attractive activities and fabulous age appropriate illustrations throughout. We take pride in creating resources that are appealing to not only students, but teachers as well.

  • Authorship
Lauren O'Brien is a qualified primary teacher and the author of this series. She is also the respected major author of the Reading Box Yellow and the best selling Grammar Conventions series of books.

  • Answers
Due to the number of skills that need to be addressed, each unit contains an extensive range of questions. As a result, the space provided for answering is often restricted. Students should be encouraged to answer questions in full sentences where possible. In cases where space is limited, short answers will suffice. A pull out answer section is attached to the centre of this book.
