Evelyn Temple Emmett was the first Director of the Tasmanian Government Tourist Bureau and a founder of the Hobart Walking Club. Today he is regarded as one of the foremost Tasmanians of his period, and is referred to as ‘The Father of Tasmanian Tourism’.


Prior to his death in 1970, Emmett had published two books about Tasmania and contributed to many other publications.


This previously unpublished book in an historical account set in the early years of Van Diemen’s Land’s European settlement, based on the lives of three generations of his pioneering Tasmanian family. The family arrived in Hobart Town as free settlers in 1819, just 16 years after its establishment as a penal colony.


It recounts incidents and adventures of his ancestors, and their interactions with famous historical figures, convicts and aborigines.
